Roaring Fork Equine Medical Center is staffed with a board-certified internal medicine specialist and supported by advanced equipment for diagnosing and treating medical disease in horses.


Medical Problems

Some medical problems that horses can experience and are diagnosed and/or treated by Roaring Fork Equine Medical Center include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Respiratory Diseases such as pneumonia, asthma, thoracic trauma, or infectious respiratory diseases such as influenza or strangles

  • Gastrointestinal Diseases such as gastric ulcers, colic (both acute and chronic), diarrhea, cancer, or weight loss

  • Liver Diseases such as bacterial or viral liver infections, toxic liver injury, cancer, or immune-mediated liver disease

  • Cardiac Diseases such as heart murmurs or arrhythmias

  • Kidney Diseases

  • Neurologic Diseases including Equine Protozoal Myelitis (EPM), Wobblers, trauma, abnormal gait, or change in behavior

  • Muscle Diseases which include tying up, poor performance, or weakness

  • Endocrine Diseases including Equine Metabolic Syndrome or Pars Pituitary Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID - formerly known as Equine Cushings)

  • Foal Illnesses such as diarrhea, failure of passive transfer, or general poor-doing

Evaluation of healthy newborn foals also available.


Equipment

Some of the advanced equipment that is used in the evaluation of our horse patients include:

  • Ultrasound for echocardiograms, thoracic, and abdominal ultrasound

  • 1 meter endoscopy unit for evaluation of the upper airways

  • 3 meter endoscopy unit for gastroscopy, or evaluation of the stomach

  • Full lab with equipment to run complete blood counts (CBC), chemistry panels, and blood gases

  • Digital cytology unit for evaluation of samples by a virtual pathologist


Additional Services

We offer hospitalization for care of critically ill horses or those with labor intensive treatments. Our facility also includes a state-of-the-art isolation unit for horses with infectious illness. 

Exercising ECG and 24-hour Holter ECG is also available but requires advanced notice to ensure that equipment can be available.
